White House supports Chinese involvement in Ukraine talks 1

The National Security Council Coordinator for Strategic Communications, John Kirby, has announced that the Biden administration is in favor of a potential meeting between Chinese Communist leader Xi Jinping and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. According to Kirby, this would allow the Chinese communist leadership to better understand the needs of the Ukrainian people. The White House has been encouraging this meeting for some time, but would be cautious of any attempt by China to broker a peace deal without consulting with Ukraine first. The Chinese Communist Party has been positioning itself as a mediator but has openly supported Russia’s conquest and has not engaged in any substantive talks with Ukrainian officials. Zelenskyy has emphasized the need for Russian troops to leave Ukraine to preserve national sovereignty, and Kirby has warned that a ceasefire without Russian withdrawal would only recognize Russia’s gains and attempts to conquer a neighbor’s territory by force, and that a just and enduring peace must include Ukrainian perspectives and decisions.
