An assistant fire chief from Vancouver Fire Rescue Services is currently recovering in a Hong Kong hospital after contracting an infection commonly known as flesh-eating disease. This unfortunate incident led to the amputation of part of his leg during a family vacation. Vancouver Fire Chief Karen Fry expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support for Christopher Won, describing him as one of the strongest, most resilient, and committed individuals they know.
Mr. Won’s partner, Marie Hui, shared a photo of him sitting up in a hospital bed with a bouquet of flowers sent by Vancouver Mayor Ken Sim and city councillors. In her post, Ms. Hui mentioned that Mr. Won almost didn’t survive the operating theatre during a series of surgeries to amputate his leg above the knee. She praised him and the doctors for fighting hard against necrotizing fasciitis, stating that they were waiting for Mr. Won to be cleared to fly back home to Vancouver.
Highlighting the sudden turn of events, a previous post by Ms. Hui mentioned how a joyful vacation ended up with Mr. Won hospitalized and their family stranded, unable to return home. She also shared a message from Mr. Won expressing his overwhelming gratitude for the support and his eagerness to come back home and thank everyone personally. Additionally, a fundraising page set up by a friend of the family revealed that Mr. Won has a career with the city spanning over 20 years, while Ms. Hui is beloved as an anthem singer for various sports teams.
