Vancouver abandons living wage policy for employees. 1

The City of Vancouver has recently put an end to its living wage policy after six years. The decision was made after a private meeting on Jan. 31 by councillors who plan to revamp the program so that it uses a five-year rolling average living wage for direct employees and contracted service providers. This move will result in a lower living wage rate of $20.90 per hour, as reported by Living Wage for Families BC (LWFBC) who has advocated for the program in the past. LWFBC noted that the living wage increased significantly by 17.3 percent last year, exceeding inflation rates. The Canadian Press has also contributed to this report.
