The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), the third-largest political party in South Africa, has ignited violence and public unrest with their radical messaging and promises of prosperity. The EFF accuses the ruling African National Congress (ANC) of favoring white capitalists over poor black citizens and has called for the seizure of land and nationalization of banks. Despite being staunch supporters of Zimbabwe’s ZANU-PF party and Russia and China, the EFF has seen growing support, with polls showing them as the fastest-growing political party in the country. The EFF’s recent protests, calling for a national shutdown, have been met with heavy police and army presence, and hundreds have been arrested for public violence. While the shutdown failed to gain widespread support, political analysts warn that the EFF remains a credible threat to the ANC ahead of next year’s elections.
