UK defence industry safeguarding against Chinese and Russian infiltration. 1

Defence officials and suppliers in the UK are taking steps to investigate the possibility of Chinese or Russian infiltration in the supply chain, which could include surveillance equipment. The move follows the discovery by The Mail on Sunday that six army bases contained Chinese-made Hikvision or Dahua surveillance cameras. At the ConservativeHome Defence and Security Conference, Defence Procurement minister Alex Chalk warned that the UK needed to forego “Gucci weapons” and instead adopt a continuous procurement process to maintain capability rather than wait for theoretical developments. Chalk also mentioned concerns over Chinese infiltration of UK technology universities.
