Trudeau questioned about potential Chinese funding in 2019 election. 1

The latest report on national security leaks alleged that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was aware of the Chinese regime’s funding of federal candidates before the 2019 election. When asked about his knowledge and actions, he did not provide a direct response but announced the appointment of a special rapporteur to investigate foreign interference in response to the issue. Global News published an article based on an unredacted 2019 report from the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians (NSICOP) outlining examples of foreign interference in Canadian politics. The examples included a People’s Republic of China (PRC) Embassy interlocutor founding the “tea party,” a group of community leaders to select and endorse candidates, and a former PRC Commercial Consul educating PRC businesses on rules regarding Canadian political contributions. The Trudeau government has been accused of ignoring Beijing’s actions, and Trudeau’s appointments of the NSICOP and the National Security and Intelligence Review Agency to review election interference in the last two contests will only provide broad information to the public.
