Toronto Mayor Rob Ford resigns; Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland approves. 1

Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Chrystia Freeland has stated that Mayor John Tory did the right thing by resigning after admitting to an affair with a staff member. Freeland denied reports that she had encouraged Tory not to resign, calling them “wholly untrue and inaccurate”. At a city council budget meeting on Wednesday, Tory’s attempts to speak were interrupted by members of the public calling for his resignation. Ontario Premier Doug Ford, however, said that Tory should not resign and that it would be a “disaster” if a left-wing mayor were to take his place. It is yet to be seen who will act as Tory’s interim successor, though Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie is likely to fill the role until a byelection is held. The Canadian Press contributed to this report.
