Australia’s former Prime Minister, Tony Abbott, pleaded with U.S. Speaker Mike Johnson for Ukraine to receive funds before Christmas. Abbott warned Johnson that it is crucial for the U.S. to help Ukraine to maintain the global order. Johnson responded by noting the importance of resolving the U.S. border crisis, as fentanyl is the leading cause of death in the U.S. for Americans aged 18 to 49. However, he also assured that the U.S. can both resolve the border crisis and support Ukraine.
The United States is currently pushing for U.S. Congress to approve $105 billion in spending, including about $60 billion for Ukraine. President Joe Biden emphasized the urgency of passing the Ukraine funding before Congress’ holiday recess, so as not to give Putin the upper hand. Speaking alongside President Biden, President Zelenskyy expressed Ukraine’s determination to win the war and disrupt Russia’s offensive operations by 2024.
