Australian MP Andrew Leigh has highlighted the imbalance in the digital space, where powerful platforms exercise too much control in the market, using the recent Roald Dahl incident as an example. The “sensitive” editions of Dahl’s books by Netflix have been caused by the lack of competition in the digital space, he explained. Penguin, the British publisher, was criticised for changing and rewriting Dahl’s books, but UK publisher Puffin has announced that it will also release The Roald Dahl Classic Collection with the author’s original texts in print. Leigh, who is Assistant Minister for Competition, Charities and Treasury, further discussed the influence of big tech companies such as Meta, Apple, Microsoft, Alphabet and Amazon and the watchdog’s recommended measures to ensure competition and prevent scams, harmful apps and fake reviews in the digital marketplace.
