Spanish court denies Dani Alves’ appeal against sex claim detention.

The Spanish court denied Brazilian soccer player Dani Alves’ request to be released from jail on remand as the investigation into an alleged sexual assault in a Barcelona night club continues. Alves has denied any wrongdoing. His lawyer had asked for him to be released on bail if he gave up his passport and wore an electronic tag, but the court disagreed due to the possibility of Alves fleeing due to the severity of the punishment he faces. This case has attracted much attention in Spain due to Alves’ profile and the 2016 gang-rape of a teenager during the San Fermin bull-running festival. In Spain, a claim of rape is investigated as a sexual assault and can lead to a jail sentence of four to 15 years. If convicted, the victim is also entitled to financial compensation for physical, psychological, and moral harm. Alves is currently being held at the Brians 2 prison on the outskirts of Barcelona.
