South Australia wants to list Parklands and Hills as a World Heritage site. 1

The Adelaide Parklands, parts of the city, and settlements in the Adelaide Hills are on a four-year mission to secure World Heritage listing. Recently, the bid gained state government backing, allowing the City of Adelaide and the Adelaide Hills Council to move forward with their submission to the World Heritage Centre. The submission will include every aspect of the bid with a focus on proposing the outstanding universal value of the involved regions. Lord Mayor Jane Lomax-Smith believes that Adelaide’s parklands and city layout make it unique, highlighting the strong commitment needed to achieve this international recognition. The bid also welcomes the input of First Nations communities and world heritage experts, while the Environment Minister Susan Close has written to the federal government seeking its support. The Adelaide Parklands and the city layout were listed on the National Heritage Register in 2008, and the Naracoorte Caves National Park is currently South Australia’s only World Heritage site. However, the state government is also drafting a bid for the Flinders Ranges National Park. Adelaide Hills Council Mayor Jan-Claire Wisdom hopes this listing will recognize the city and hills as living landscapes while respecting heritage values and giving voice to Indigenous perspectives of settlement.
