Snowy weather hits southern British Columbia highways. Be cautious. 1

A snow-covered mountain pass in British Columbia’s southern and southeastern regions is facing extreme winter conditions, despite the first day of spring being only a week away. The majority of the routes have had snowfall warnings posted, with 15 to 25 centimetres of snow expected at higher elevations of the passes north and east of Hope by Tuesday morning, according to Environment Canada. Moreover, up to 15 centimetres of snow is expected along the Sea-to-Sky Highway between Squamish and Whistler. Conditions there are likely to ease by later in the day, as reported by the weather office. However, Avalanche Canada has raised the risk to high over much of the south coast and southern Interior as all the new snow, combined with strong winds and warmer temperatures, is expected to create “very dangerous” avalanche conditions with large, naturally triggered slides likely. Avalanche Canada warns people to make “conservative, low-consequence choices” if they venture into the backcountry due to the high danger ratings.
