In an interview with The Times of London, the UK’s Defence Secretary Grant Shapps stated the country must remain committed to protecting shipping routes in light of recent conflict in the Red Sea. The Defense Secretary also called for maintaining support for Ukraine’s fight against Russia’s invasion, asserting that defending national security should be the priority, regardless of cost.
Mr. Shapps emphasized the importance of international commerce and maritime security in preventing major shipping routes from becoming “no-go areas.” He stressed the need for a safer world and the importance of repelling illegal attacks to promoting free trade and a rules-based world order.
Regarding defence spending, Mr. Shapps remained steadfast in his support of budget increases, stating that the UK will strive to reach 3 percent of GDP and may even consider higher levels. Warning against skimping on defense, the Defence Secretary emphasized the necessity of maintaining basic defence standards to secure national prosperity and way of life.
Referring to the conflicts abroad as well as ongoing tension surrounding planned foreign aid packages, Shapps voiced concerns for the rest of the West, stressing the urgent need for increased defense spending and the reality of an increasingly dangerous world.
