A police officer serving with Nunavut RCMP has been charged with three criminal offences following an alleged assault while on duty.

Constable Luke Tomkinson is facing charges of assault with a weapon, pointing a firearm, and uttering threats.

The incident allegedly took place in Arctic Bay in 2020, where Tomkinson was working as a relief member. Located on the northern end of Baffin Island, Arctic Bay is home to approximately 1,000 people.

An RCMP news release emphasizes the importance of officer conduct in maintaining the trust of the communities they serve. The force asserts that the allegations against Tomkinson do not reflect the integrity of RCMP members, nor the values that they represent.

Tomkinson’s next court appearance is scheduled for April 3 in Iqaluit.
