THE HAGUE, Netherlands—On Monday, the Royal House announced that Princess Beatrix, the 85-year-old former Dutch queen, had undergone surgery after sustaining a broken wrist in a skiing accident the previous Friday. The Royal House stated that she was “otherwise in good health and will recover at home.” Beatrix had reigned for 33 years before abdicating in 2013 in favor of her son, Willem-Alexander.
Tragically, the second of Beatrix’s three sons, Johan Friso, passed away in 2013, 18 months after he suffered severe brain injuries caused by an avalanche while skiing in Austria.
