The Metropolitan Police Department Chief Pamela A. Smith stated that any kind of violence, lawless behavior, and criminal activities would not be tolerated during protests. A pro-Palestinian demonstration in Washington D.C. led to clashes between protesters and riot police, and a gate of the White House was almost breached. Police and federal agents were on standby on the nearside of the White House as protesters attempted to break through the reinforced gate. The issues were addressed promptly and temporary damage was repaired by U.S. Secret Service support teams.
The riot at the White House on the evening of January 12 also saw vocal opposition to the United States’ recent launch of Tomahawk missiles and fighter jets in a retaliatory move against attacks from Yemen’s Houthi terrorist group. Furthermore, some have alleged possible infiltration by affiliates of the Hamas terrorist group at the protests outside the White House.
According to investigative journalist Sam Shoemate, evidence has surfaced pointing to the involvement of Hamas-affiliated groups in the protests. The riot led to a partial evacuation of staff members from the White House, and President Biden issued a statement on January 11 in response to the Houthi attacks. The administration’s support of Israel has sparked widespread criticism from several advocates and human rights groups.
