President Joe Biden set off a series of strikes, against Iran-backed Houthi rebels in Yemen, on Thursday, as a response to a series of drone and missile attacks on ships in the Red Sea. More than 50 nations have been affected by 27 attacks on international commercial shipping, according to the White House.
President Biden said the successful strikes on Yemen were conducted with support from Australia, Canada, the Netherlands, and Bahrain and were conducted against “a number of targets in Yemen used by Houthi rebels to endanger freedom of navigation in one of the world’s most vital waterways.” He has warned of further measures to protect the American people and the free flow of international commerce if necessary.
The strikes divided members of Congress, with some declaring the attacks unconstitutional as President Joe Biden did not consult with Congress before launching them. However, allies of President Biden stated that the President can initiate limited military action, as per 50 US §1543 as long as a report is delivered to Congress within 48 hours.
Iran and the Houthis scornfully viewed the strikes as a direct breach of Yemen’s sovereignty, which would lead to further instability in the region. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and others believe the strikes are necessary and send a clear message to the Houthis that they will face further costs if they do not end their illegal attacks.
