Calls have been made for the Oscars to revoke Hong Kong actor Donnie Yen’s invitation to be a presenter at the upcoming Academy Awards. Activists claim that Yen’s ties with the Chinese communist regime and his criticism of the Hong Kong democracy movement make him unsuitable. A petition on Change.org has amassed tens of thousands of signatures, and even a spokesperson for the Hong Kong Forum in Los Angeles has suggested finding another Asian-American actor to replace Yen. Yen has repeatedly expressed support for the CCP’s violent suppression of human rights protests in Hong Kong and is a member of China’s ruling Communist Party’s National Committee representing Hong Kong.
