On Nov. 17, 2022, Conservative deputy leader Tim Uppal rose during Question Period in Ottawa. In response to the Liberal Party’s spin that the Conservatives explicitly support the pre-emptive use of the notwithstanding clause, Uppal wrote a letter to the World Sikh Organization of Canada to reassure them that the party remains opposed to Quebec’s secularism law. He stated that the provision is a long-standing part of the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the ability of provinces to use it is the legal reality. However, Uppal made it clear that Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre is against the Quebec law that bans some public servants from wearing religious symbols at work.
