Opposition MPs demand minister testify on wiretapping delay of Michael Chan. 1

Minister of Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair is being called upon by opposition MPs to appear in committee after a new report claims he took months to approve surveillance measures against an important Liberal Party figure in Toronto. MPs from the Conservative Party, Bloc Québécois, and NDP wrote a letter to committee chair Liberal MP Bardish Chagger, requesting Blair’s appearance in committee. The letter highlights that the committee was about to start its study on Beijing’s targeting of Tory MP Michael Chong. A new report in the Globe and Mail claims that CSIS had sought a judicial application against Michael Chan in early 2021, but Blair waited until June before signing on it. Some CSIS members suspected the delay was due to Chan being a main organizer and fundraiser for the Liberal Party. The report has led to renewed calls for a public inquiry into foreign interference by the Conservative Party.
