Various police departments in Ontario have declared their intention to collaborate in their efforts to curb the growth of street racing activities.
As part of the venture, known as Project Erase, police departments across the Greater Toronto Area including Ontario Provincial Police, and those in Waterloo and Barrie plan to use a mixture of enforcement measures and educational programmes to combat this issue.
According to Toronto police acting Supt. Matt Moyer, the city has seen a total of 521 charges relating to stunt driving and a 31% increase in reports of stunt driving since the start of January.
Meanwhile, police chiefs in Peel Region and Durham Region disclosed that they have laid a combined total of 600 charges against those responsible for street racing activities this year. Durham Region’s deputy police chief revealed that they have begun using automated licence plate readers as part of their efforts to combat street racing, while York Region police confirmed plans to use unmarked cruisers as part of their enforcement strategies.
If anyone witnesses dangerous driving or street racing, they are encouraged to report the incident to the Police or Crime Stoppers.
