New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon is scheduled to visit Sydney on Dec. 20 to engage with the Australian government in discussions about security and economic issues. Luxon’s decision to visit Australia as his first overseas destination after assuming office earlier this month underscores the importance of the relationship between the two countries. In a statement, Luxon expressed his government’s intent to prioritize investments in relationships, economic prosperity, and security, beginning with Australia which is New Zealand’s most important partner and only ally.
Luxon also expressed anticipation for ongoing discussions with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese during his term and reaffirmed New Zealand’s commitment to collaborating with Australia to support stability and security in the Indo-Pacific region. Meanwhile, Albanese welcomed Luxon’s visit, emphasizing the close bond between Australia and New Zealand that is rooted in history and generations of community, business, and government connections.
As Luxon advances the bilateral relationship with Australia, New Zealand Trade Minister Todd McClay will be traveling to India and Singapore to focus on trade matters. McClay highlighted the priority placed by the coalition government on enhancing ties with India, the world’s most populous country and the fifth-largest economy, as well as strengthening trade relations with strategic trading partner Singapore. He emphasized Singapore’s significance as a critical hub for New Zealand’s supply lines and their alignment on issues such as the green economy and supply chain management.
