New welfare leader advocates improved rights for refugees. 1

A banner image shows Hang Vo, who is set to become the first Vietnamese refugee to lead Australia’s peak welfare body, the Australian Council of Social Service. Vo’s lived experience as a woman from a working-class family and as a refugee has been integral to her work in social services. She hopes her appointment as president will help more refugees progress into leadership positions. Vo is currently the CEO of Sacred Heart Mission and has previously served as CEO of youth services organisation Whitelion and as a board director of Respect Victoria and the Victorian Pride Centre.
