A new “Gen Z Party” has emerged in Australia, alleging that the baby boomer generation has failed to represent their interests. The group is calling for the older generations in government to step down and allow for a younger, fresher leadership. They also express that both the major center-left Labor and center-right Liberal Party have been detrimental to Australia’s future by failing to take strong climate action. The Gen Z Party aims to join forces with the Greens Party to advance their platform and they are also calling for more social media influencers to run for Parliament.
The party’s key policies include environmental action, such as aiming for net zero carbon emissions, electricity from clean and nuclear sources, and transitioning to clean energy with coal export earnings. Additionally, they are advocating for student debt cancellation, tax breaks for under 25s, and drug decriminalization. The group is expressing that it is unfair for the younger generation to have to pay off a substantial amount of student debt while being deprived of the economic benefits of obtaining a degree.
The Gen Z Party’s support of nuclear energy is in line with their initiative to promote clean energy solutions. Although their candidacy is not yet registered as an official political party in Australia, the Gen Z Party is calling on those who have a significant social media following to stand for Parliament. They argue that younger individuals would better represent the interests of their generation and the party aims to eventually achieve registration in all Australian states.
