The Fédération des syndicats de l’enseignement, a union representing 95,000 teachers in Quebec, has reported progress in their negotiations with the government after a series of public sector strikes. A partial agreement was reached after an overnight negotiating session, although specific terms were not disclosed. The union plans to present the details of the proposal to its council on December 22. However, unresolved issues, such as salaries, will continue to be addressed as joint negotiations with other public sector unions, through an alliance called the common front, are ongoing.
Another union, the Fédération autonome de l’enseignement, representing 66,000 teachers, has announced that it will continue an unlimited strike in the new year due to a deadlock in its own negotiations with Quebec. This strike has led to the closure of around 800 schools for more than four weeks. While the negotiations regarding the strikes continue, the unions’ ongoing disputes have had a significant impact on the education system in Quebec.
