In a year-end interview, NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh firmly stated that his party is not open to the idea of forming a coalition government with the Liberals if no party wins a clear majority after the next federal election. This declaration comes despite the close working relationship the two parties have developed. Back in March 2022, the NDP signed a deal to support the minority Liberals on key votes in Parliament, in exchange for action on NDP policy priorities. This collaboration has resulted in the introduction of a national dental-care program, rental supplements for low-income tenants, a temporary doubling of the GST rebate, and legislation banning replacement workers. The agreement is set to remain in place until 2025, with the next federal election scheduled for October of that year.
Mr. Singh expressed that the New Democrats are focused on getting through the current session of Parliament and emphasizing their intent to win the next election. Despite the previous cooperation and achievements, the NDP is resolute in its decision not to pursue a coalition government in the event of a hung Parliament.
