Most Canadians Favor Death Penalty for Murder - Survey 1

A recent poll conducted by Research Co. found that the majority of Canadian adults support the reinstatement of the death penalty for individuals convicted of murder. Out of 1,000 participants polled, 54% agreed with capital punishment, reflecting a three-point increase since a similar poll conducted in February 2022. The poll revealed that 62% of residents in Alberta were most in favor of the death penalty, followed by Saskatchewan and Manitoba at 60%, Ontario and British Columbia at 58%, and Atlantic Canada at 55%. Quebec had the lowest support for capital punishment at 43%. The survey also showed that support for the death penalty varied among age categories, with 59% of individuals aged 55 and over agreeing with reinstating it. The majority of individuals who opposed state executions for murder cited the possibility of wrongful conviction and execution as their primary concern. Canada abolished capital punishment in 1998, and state executions have not been permissible since then.
