Minister wants to revamp air passenger rights after 42,000 complaints. 1

Transport Minister Omar Alghabra has announced plans to close loopholes that let airlines deny compensation to passengers affected by cancelled flights, with an overhaul of air passenger rights legislation scheduled for the spring session of Parliament. The Canadian government has also pledged $75.9 million over three years to destuff the Canadian Transportation Agency’s backlog, which currently holds 42,000 passenger complaints. The CTA was established to regulate the airline industry and investigate cases relating to the Air Passenger Protection Regulations, put in place in 2019 to deal with complaints over cancelled or delayed flights, denied boarding, and lost luggage. The reforms will compel airlines to take responsibility for compensation and remove the ‘safety reasons’ exemption.
