On Feb. 14, 2023, police in Switzerland’s capital Bern conducted a large-scale operation after a man wearing a bulletproof vest and weapon holster was spotted near the southern entrance of the Swiss Parliament, the Bundeshaus. During a body check, the man was found to be carrying explosives. The suspect was taken in for physical and mental exams, and a criminal investigation was opened.
The area around the Parliament building and nearby streets were cordoned off as security teams, including fire squads and de-mining experts backed by a police dog and drones, inspected an abandoned car associated with the suspect. After it was determined that the car posed no danger, the security measures were lifted.
