Liberal MP Ken McDonald initially called for a leadership review of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, but later backtracked on his comments, clarifying that he did not intend to suggest a formal review. In an email statement to The Epoch Times on Jan. 25, McDonald stated, “The intent of my recent public comments was not to personally call for a leadership review, and I am not calling for one now.” He emphasized his continued support for the prime minister and his caucus colleagues, highlighting Trudeau’s political acumen and dedication to the best interests of Canadians.
During an interview with CBC Radio-Canada on Jan. 24, McDonald expressed the need for the party to “clear the air” and enable people to voice their opinions on the party’s direction. Despite acknowledging the positive impact of Trudeau’s prime ministership on his own electoral victory in 2015, McDonald raised concerns about the current sentiments towards the leader and the party’s future. He noted a prevailing dissatisfaction with Trudeau, particularly in Atlantic Canada, and suggested that the party may need to consider a leadership change.
Although Trudeau faces declining support and calls for a leadership review, he expressed his determination to continue pursuing the progressive vision of progress. In a year-end interview with CBC News, he asserted that he has no plans to resign, emphasizing his commitment to the goals and values that have defined his leadership over the past years.
