A group of lawyers, called Lawyers Are Responsible, have signed a “Declaration of Conscience” stating that they will no longer prosecute campaign groups such as Extinction Rebellion and Just Stop Oil, due to laws that they believe contribute to climate injustice. The group aims to raise awareness of the damage that current laws cause and has vowed to refuse to take on new fossil fuel projects. The group includes over 120 signatories, including Sir Geoffrey Bindman and Farhana Yamin, who helped to create the Paris Agreement on Climate Change. However, criticis are worried that their actions may diminish the public’s trust in the legal profession, as they appear to be making one-sided political statements.
