John Tory departs as Toronto's Mayor after a tumultuous tenure. 1

Today marks the end of John Tory’s tenure as mayor of Toronto. Last week, Tory made a public announcement regarding an “inappropriate relationship” with a former staff member and announced his resignation. After his budget was approved late Wednesday night, Tory submitted his formal resignation. Deputy Mayor Jennifer McKelvie will take over on an interim basis and has stated that she will not be running for the position. Toronto’s city council will soon declare the mayor’s office vacant and a byelection will be held. Tory’s third term as mayor will come to an end just four months after his re-election in October. He has expressed his hope to continue contributing to Toronto in the future and apologized to the people of Toronto for his actions.
