Tokyo and other parts of eastern Japan experienced strong shaking on Friday due to a magnitude 6.1 earthquake. The quake was centered off the coast of Chiba Peninsula with a depth of 44.5 kilometers (28 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Although Chiba and Ibaraki prefectures reported strong shaking, the USGS stated that there was low risk of significant damage or fatalities.

Local reports confirmed no issues at the Tokai No. 2 nuclear power plant in Ibaraki. However, a recent major earthquake in central Japan on May 5 resulted in at least one death and more than 20 people injured. Japan faces a high risk of earthquakes, with the devastating 2011 earthquake in the country’s northeast causing catastrophic damage and a nuclear plant meltdown.
