Israeli forces have uncovered an extraordinarily large concrete and iron-girded tunnel at the Gaza-Israel border designed to transport carloads of terrorists from Gaza directly to the border. This discovery came after Israel launched an offensive targeting Hamas terrorists following their attack on southern towns and army bases on Oct 7.
Hamas had also overtaken the Erez border crossing in that incident. The military revealed an exit point found in a sand dune, south of the checkpoint, which concealed a substantial and electrified tunnel designed by Hamas. The tunnel ran 50 meters deep, expanding to a relatively spacious 3 meters in height and width, reaching a length of 4 kilometers.
Chief military spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari shared that it was “the biggest tunnel we found in Gaza… meant to target the [Erez] crossing,” but remained uncertain if it was used during the Oct. 7 attack. These tunnels serve as a challenge for Israel’s engineers who fear they could be used to hide hostages in the future.
On Oct. 29, Israel’s Ynet news site reported that troops killed several gunmen who attacked Erez via a tunnel. Hagari’s office did not respond to a query on whether that referred to the tunnel he showed during his presentation.
