The nation is in debate over whether or not Australia Day should be celebrated, as several major retailers have claimed they would not be selling any Australia Day products. Bunnings, Australia’s biggest hardware and garden centre chain, has stated that stores are free to celebrate the national day in any way they choose to. Ben Camire, Director of Store Operations, said of the situation that the company recognizes that Australia Day means different things to different people and that they want to respect everyone’s point of view. In response to the conservative outcry against their decision, Woolworths claimed that there has been a decline in the demand for the products in recent years. Coles, however, will be selling a limited range of Australian-themed summer entertaining merchandise in celebration of Australia Day.
