Reports from RCMP in at least two Canadian provinces have indicated a significant increase in fuel thefts in 2022 compared to 2021. Around 818 cases were recorded in Saskatchewan, with 70% of those involving individuals fuelling up at a gas station and driving off without paying, whilst 106 involved theft from bulk fuel tanks at businesses and locations. In Manitoba, fuel thefts rose around 43% to approximately 972, however, it is hard to track these figures as they are often classed as theft in general. The rise is possibly connected to the increasing cost of fuel, according to a gas analyst. Another issue for the authorities is that when fuel is stolen, it cannot be traced back to its origin or owner. The police are urging people to take measures to protect themselves against fuel theft, including locking fuel tanks and video or photo surveillance around fuel tanks.
