The French government has announced a ban on the usage of the popular video-sharing app TikTok on official phones used by civil servants. The Civil Service Minister, Stanislas Guerini, stated that the move is necessary to ensure the cybersecurity of government offices and employees. Guerini also noted that other international partners have implemented similar measures due to concerns over TikTok’s inadequate cybersecurity and data protection standards. Exceptions to the ban might be allowed in certain cases for professional purposes. Other Western governments and institutions have taken similar actions in recent weeks due to rising concerns about the potential for the Chinese government to collect sensitive user data through TikTok’s parent company, ByteDance.
