The Cuscatlan stadium, where the incident took place, is one of the largest stadiums in Central America, with a capacity of over 44,000 fans. The Salvadoran Football Federation expressed regret over the incident and solidarity with the affected families. The federation has suspended the tournament and called for a meeting with the Security Commission of Sports Venues. President Nayib Bukele has also announced that both the National Civil Police and the Attorney General’s Office will conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. This incident follows a fatal stampede in East Java, Indonesia, in October 2022, where 135 spectators lost their lives while trying to flee the stadium.
