The problem with the government interfering in the lives of Canadians runs much deeper than just politicians telling people what they should believe and how to raise their children. This issue extends to institutions that are meant to operate independently and free from political influence. Canadians have generally assumed that the courts, police, military, and security agencies like CSIS remain apolitical, but recent events suggest otherwise. These institutions can be co-opted to promote the policies and ideology of the current federal government.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre gained the support of many Canadians with his “mind your own business” approach, calling out the government’s overreach into people’s lives. At the heart of this issue lies the battle over the rights of parents to raise their children according to their beliefs, without undue interference from politicians and school boards. This has manifested in resistance to gender ideology and the state’s role in raising children, leading to the Million Person March in Ottawa.
The pushback from the state and its institutions has been seen in response to common-sense directives put forth in Alberta, promoting parental oversight over life-altering decisions for children. Parents who are advocating for the sensibility of such policies are now being associated with extremism by intelligence and security agencies, suggesting that parents are potential terrorists for their views. This reflects a dangerous trend of political targeting, as seen in the United States as well.
Several Canadian institutions have become hubs for woke, liberal policies, such as the Canadian Armed Forces and the RCMP. This has led to politicization and misuse of power, as seen in the cases of individuals charged for participating in peaceful protests.
With all these developments, the government is using increasingly authoritarian measures, violating citizens’ rights in the process. Ultimately, Canada is following in the footsteps of other countries, compromising the freedom and privacy of its citizens in the name of ideological agendas.
