The City of Prince Rupert is currently dealing with a troubling incident that has resulted in the death of 19 eagles. According to reports, an unknown “deleterious substance” was dumped at a local landfill on March 1, leading to this tragic outcome.
In response to the incident, the city has launched an investigation to identify the substance responsible for the eagles’ deaths. Cleanup efforts have already begun, and the city has enlisted the help of an environmental consultant to develop a long-term action plan to address the situation.
The spill occurred at the landfill’s liquid waste site, specifically in a pond, and fortunately, it was contained and did not spread further. Despite this containment, the loss of the eagles is described as “devastating” and has deeply affected the staff involved in the cleanup and investigation.
The City of Prince Rupert is working closely with the provincial environment ministry and Environment Canada to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. Additionally, efforts are being made to raise awareness about the dangers of dumping harmful substances, with plans to improve existing campaigns to educate the public about responsible waste disposal practices.
