Chamber of Commerce: Canadian Privacy at Risk 1

The House of Commons heritage committee in Canada has requested tech giants Meta and Google to provide internal and external communications related to the proposed Online News Act, which requires companies to pay Canadian media firms for linking their content. The request is aimed at determining the companies’ plans for the legislation, which critics claim could infringe privacy rights by setting a precedent for such investigations. Concerns have been raised that the move could have a chilling effect on businesses and organisations, who could fear that their internal discussions about legislation may be divulged. The committee has also summoned Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg to testify on the company’s threat to block news from Canadians on its social-media platforms.
