The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) has tightened control over Chinese citizens’ overseas travel as an increasing number of citizens flee the country. Many individuals are attempting to escape after the CCP’s strict “zero-COVID” lockdowns. Most of them are making their way to the United States, which has attracted the attention of the international community.
Reportedly, the CCP has tightened its control over Chinese citizens’ overseas travel. This move is in stark contrast to the CCP’s claim of confidence in its system. Various reports and testimonies from fleeing citizens have revealed that Chinese nationals at different economic levels are utilizing different routes to reach the United States.
Despite the tightening of exit controls, many people have found ways to leave China. Those who have been able to depart tended to do so discreetly. Interrogations by customs agents have become more frequent, and procedures for obtaining passports have become more stringent. There have been increased restrictions and punishments for those caught trying to flee the country.
The CCP’s efforts to control overseas travel have been attributed to its fear of losing face internationally. Reports have indicated that the CCP has been cracking down on those caught attempting to leave the country. Additionally, there are instances of the CCP using exit bans and other measures to punish human rights defenders and control ethnic-religious groups, actions that violate human rights principles.
