Canada and the US discuss treaty for Columbia River management. 1

The Columbia River Treaty negotiations between Canadian and U.S. officials have recently concluded in Kelowna after five years. Both parties will continue their discussions on August 10th and 11th in Seattle. The original treaty, signed in 1964, aimed to control flooding caused by the Columbia River and generate power for the region. However, its implementation came at a cost of 1,100 square kilometers of flooded land and displaced over 2,000 individuals, including several First Nations communities. Indigenous cultural values, salmon reintroduction, and domestic ecosystem concerns were prioritized during the negotiations.
