President Joe Biden is working to secure a temporary ceasefire in response to the conflict between Israel and Gaza. Biden has expressed concern about Israel’s reaction and called it “over the top,” pushing for a pause in the fighting to allow the release of hostages held by Hamas. He also noted the need for humanitarian assistance for innocent people in Gaza who are suffering and dying. During a press conference, President Biden mistakenly referred to Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as Mexico’s president but has been steadfast in his efforts to deal with the ceasefire and end the fighting in Gaza.
Israel started its military offensive in Gaza after a terror attack by Hamas which led to 1,200 deaths in Israel and the taking of about 240 hostages by Hamas. President Biden mentioned that over 27,500 people in Gaza have died, and many more are believed to be trapped under rubble. He has been diligently working towards a ceasefire, hoping that it will lead to a prolonged pause in the fighting, and has been in talks with Saudi Arabia and Israel about the situation.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has rejected Hamas’ ceasefire terms, pledging total victory and the eradication of all Hamas forces in Gaza. He has dismissed demands raised by Hamas, describing them as “bizarre.” Negotiations are ongoing with the help of Qatar and Egypt as mediators. President Biden’s statements and diplomatic efforts reflect the urgency of the situation in Gaza, highlighting the need to stop the violence and suffering.
