Australian retailer offers electric car subscriptions. 1

An Australian energy company has launched a new range of electric vehicle (EV) subscriptions on a monthly basis to encourage EV adoption in the country. Origin Energy recently released a statement announcing the new service which will offer customers more affordable and flexible alternatives to traditional car ownership. The company’s subscription packages include a range of 12 different EV models, all available on a monthly basis with prices starting at $305 per week. The electric cars on offer are provided by manufacturers including Tesla, Polestar, BYD, MG, and Volvo. The packages will be salary-packaged by customers’ employers and are tax-exempt, with the subscriptions being based on a month-to-month basis. In addition to this, customers will have access to Origin Energy’s EV Energy Plan, providing free energy for five hours during the day and off-peak energy rates between 1 am and 6 am. Origin Energy’s subscription service is the latest of similar offerings from rival energy companies AGL, Aurora Energy, and others, as Australia lags behind other countries in terms of EV adoption. Despite the rise in EV purchases, petrol and diesel cars still make up the vast majority of the 20.1 million registered motor vehicles in Australia with only 83,000 EVs on the roads.
