The prime minister recently announced another A$20 million (US$13.39 million) in financial assistance for the state’s southeast, as a result of the wild weather that Queenslanders have been experiencing. The funding comes following devastating storms, with 3.5 million lightning strikes that took down nearly 1000 power lines, leaving 130,000 homes without electricity initially.
The Bureau of Meteorology has warned that more severe thunderstorms may hit southeastern Queensland again this week. These storms could likely lead to additional flooding and road closures. The major recovery effort, expected to take years, has already been set in motion after it caused the devastation of far north Queensland.
After the initial $20 million announcement, the prime minister emphasized that the government is committed to helping Queenslanders and will support them through the recovery process. So far, over 86,000 people have received financial aid from the federal government for the damage caused by the storms. Additionally, almost 2000 people have reached out for mental health first aid after these extreme weather events. Federal Treasurer Jim Chalmers also urged insurance companies to offer support and assistance to those affected by the disasters.
