Nearly 100 members of the Australian Defence Force (ADF) are set to travel to the United Kingdom to help train Ukrainian military personnel, strengthening the country’s ability to defend themselves in the ongoing conflict with Russia. The ADF’s involvement in Operation Kudu will see 90 members depart from Adelaide to provide vital military support to Ukrainian forces. Occasionally, rotations will increase to 90 members at a time in order to enhance the preparedness and effectiveness of Ukrainian forces.
According to Acting Defence Minister Matt Thistlethwaite, a total of 370 Australians are being sent to Ukraine to train infantry members and participate in a young leaders program. Their training mainly focuses on urban and forestry environments, representing an important role in the efforts to support Ukrainian military forces.
Since January 2023, more than 1,200 Ukrainian troops have undergone training from Australian soldiers in multinational training missions. The involvement of multiple nations, including Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, has further strengthened the training initiative, supporting Ukraine in resisting Russia’s unprovoked invasion.
Acting Prime Minister Richard Marles emphasized the critical skills that ADF personnel provide to Ukrainian recruits. Meanwhile, Foreign Minister Penny Wong underscored the importance of training Ukrainian Armed Forces, describing it as vital in supporting Ukraine’s efforts to end the war on its own terms.
However, Shadow Foreign Minister Simon Birmingham expressed concern that the Albanese government has delayed its response to a request for additional coal shipments to Ukraine. Opposition to the delayed support reflected disappointment in the government’s proactive measures to assist Ukraine with its energy needs.
Birmingham also highlighted concerns over Australia’s slowing support for Ukraine, prompting questions about the nation’s commitment to defending its values and principles. He urged for the reopening of Australia’s embassy in Kyiv, sending a clear message of support for Ukraine’s defense and for the international rules that are relied upon.
