Australia’s acquisition of nuclear-powered submarines has been described as a groundbreaking moment that will enhance its defense capability for decades to come. The Royal Australian Navy plans to procure at least eight nuclear submarines, either based on a British or American model, to replace its retiring Collins-class submarines. The details of this largest defense deal in Australia’s history are expected to be announced soon. Outgoing ambassador to Washington, Arthur Sinodinos, said that the AUKUS alliance between Australia, the US, and UK signifies Australia’s commitment to engaging with its allies. He added that this deal is a “moonshot” moment and a whole-of-nation effort. Sinodinos also noted that the cooperation between the US and Australia on advanced and nuclear technologies is now a “state of mind,” adding that there will be long-term benefits from co-operation, sharing information, and interchangeable industrial bases.
