Heavy rains have caused flooding and landslides that have killed 36 people on the northern coast of Brazil’s Sao Paulo state, according to officials. Search and rescue efforts are still underway, with over 500 people involved. Cities such as Sao Sebastiao, Ubatuba, Ilhabela, and Bertioga have declared a state of emergency and have cancelled their Carnival festivities. Mayor Felipe Augusto of Sao Sebastiao has stated that there are still dozens of people missing and that 50 houses have collapsed due to the landslides. Videos of the widespread destruction have been posted on social media, including one of a baby being rescued by locals lined up on a flooded street. Brazil’s President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva will be visiting the region on Monday. The precipitation in the region has exceeded 600 millimeters (23.6 inches) in one day, one of the highest recorded amounts in Brazil in such a short period. The army has sent two airplanes and rescue teams to the region, and a road that connects Rio de Janeiro to the port city of Santos has been blocked by landslides and floodwaters. The northern coast of Sao Paulo state is a popular destination for tourists during Carnival, who prefer to stay away from the large street parties in big cities.
