Argentina urges UK for talks on Falklands sovereignty. 1

The Argentine Foreign Ministry has requested that the UK reopen talks on the sovereignty of the Falkland Islands. Argentina has long contested British ownership of the islands, which both countries fought over in 1982 resulting in numerous fatalities. Argentine Foreign Minister Santiago Cafiero proposed restarting negotiations during a meeting with his British counterpart James Cleverly at the G20 summit in India on March 2. The Argentine government has also withdrawn from the 2016 agreement pledging to develop cooperation with the UK on South Atlantic issues. Argentina has also invited the UK to participate in a United Nations meeting to resolve the debate. Britain has expressed disappointment and reiterated that the Falkland Islands are under British sovereignty, with according to a 2013 referendum, the majority of inhabitants want to remain a self-governing UK oversea territory. China has supported Argentina’s claim in the United Nations, citing it as a legacy of colonialism, and signed an agreement supporting Argentina’s position in February 2022. However, the British Government has repeatedly stated that the sovereignty of the islands is “not in question” and highlighted the Falkland Islanders’ right to self-determination.
